Nutrient Sustainability in the Intensive Livestock Industry

Workshop attendees at Rouillier Centre of Innovation, Saint Malo, France.

In March, uPcycle delivered a hybrid workshop on Nutrient Sustainability in the Intensive Livestock Sector. The event was organised by the BETA Technological Centre in collaboration with the European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP). Over 100 participants joined online and in person, representing a wide range of stakeholders from the intensive agriculture industry, nutrient recovery sector, research institutions, policy bodies, and international cooperation networks.

The workshop was co-hosted by Rouiller and Cooperl, and featured presentations on improving nutrient management in intensive livestock systems. Discussions focused on the most effective technologies and practices currently available, as well as the barriers that must be addressed to enable wider adoption.

Participants came from countries with diverse agricultural systems, policies, and infrastructure, highlighting the critical importance of considering regional context when addressing nutrient sustainability challenges.

Insights and outcomes from the workshop—including key discussions and shared experiences—will contribute to a dedicated section on the intensive livestock sector in the upcoming uPcycle White Paper. This collaborative report will be published towards the end of the project.
